Description
Like many of us, I grew in a big family of braiders and stylist. So naturally I would pick up on the skill. Like the generation of older sisters, brothers, cousins and aunties who did our hair when we were younger, we were passed down the gift and the responsibility of keeping up the hair maintenance of the generation under us. In high school, I worked as a stylist assistant to one of my older cousins in one of the biggest salons on Atlantas East Side. I started out as a shampoo assistant, then I was upgraded to stylist assistant and with more responsibility, and gained the trust of the other stylist and their clients therefore gaining more responsibility. I was loving, having fun, learning, and above all making lots of money, and I was only 17. I decided to actually pursue the career about 7 years later. I actually was going to college, and doing natural hair on the side, braids, locs, things like that. I ended up having to sit out for a year so I decided to go and get my cosmetology licensens because I really wanted to specialize in color. I was experimenting on my own hair since middle school. Everything from kool aid to using peroxide and a blow dryer. It's crazy looking back on it now, and I didn't have a clue of the actually damage that I was causing to my poor tresses. Because most of my clients were natural and of the male gender who at that time was wearing braids, or deciding to cross over to locs, that became my speciality and the majority of my focus. I got a job at Taliah Waajid's while I was in my last year of Cosmetology school and trained as an assistant under Ayo. She helped me to grow as a natural hairstylist, enhancing what I already knew as well as educating me on the nature of locs, braids, and natural hair. That is one of the things that I was thankful for. There we had to learn how to consult with our clients, analyzing what they need, and what works best for them and there hair condition. That is one thing that I took with me that I still use till this day. The one thing about giving a consultation is that, if you don't know what you are talking about, if you don't know about hair, your craft, your talent, your clients, then you are not going to be able to give a potential client an honest and proper consultation.
