Dear Dad,

I have not had a perm going on 2 yrs now but when I had my hair out all I knew was a ponytail. I need to know affordable products to get for natural hair care!!! This friday for the first time I will be taking my braids out and leaving them out for 2 weeks what do I do!!!!!

Sincerely,
2 Years and Counting

Congratulations on two years!! You did not describe your hair. Length, thickness, softness or tightly curled are important factors. As my family and friends know, I will not be limited simply because I don’t have all the facts.

Next to my daughter’s locs, my favorite hair style is the way my wife wears her hair. The loose curls with a part are very attractive and not too difficult to achieve. When you remove the braids, if your hair is dirty, wash and condition it. The shampoo you normally use is fine. When you choose a conditioner, make sure it is one that moisturizes.

Pat dry with a towel, do not blow dry. Do not comb. Style using your fingers. Depending on your individual hair factors, at night a few loose braids in the front and satin pillow cases are all you need. In the morning, take out the braids and restyle with your fingers.

I think you will love it and your friends will also.

Good advice Dad. I just have one tip to add. In addition to a moisturizing conditioner use a spray-in leave-in conditioner after washing and shampooing. I use Soft Sheen Optimum Leave-in Conditioner.

My mom uses CURLS Quenched Curls Moisturizer.

Moisture is critical for keeping natural hair styles healthy and beautiful.
